School Dairy
The Sainik School, Bijapur has a well maintained, cared and ambitious dairy built and developed over a period of time. Today, it has more than 100 livestock population –she buffaloes, cows, bulls and goats. The milk yield is supplied to the Cadets’ Mess and staff. We get fresh and hygienic milk free from any preservatives.
The farm animals are accommodated in a spacious and well ventilated building near the horse stable. Two massive open halls provide shelter to these cows. In addition there is one more shed for the goats. A veterinary doctor takes care of the health and wellbeing of the animals during pregnancy and delivery. Routine medical inspection of health of each animal is done periodically.

There is a devoted bore well to supply fresh water for cleaning the floor, bathing of the animals and drinking. The urine and water used for cleaning the floor goes to the farm for raising the crops in the adjoining area. The large amount of dung is used for preparing wormy compost. The employees in the dairy farm have acquired and mastered the wormy Culture techniques. The School has a vast area of 65 acres of farming land where jowar, wheat and vegetable is grown. Two crops are raised every year.
There is a stock of dry grass for the cattle to supplement fresh and green fodder grown in the farm.
During the vacation time the milk is supplied to Karnataka Milk Federation Procuring Centre at Bijapur City.

The large amount of manure generated from the cattle dung is the secret of the green campus. The commercial production of the wormy compost is marketed to sustain the additional expenditure on farm labour wages, fodder procurement, power bills payment and expansion of dairy and farming activities.
The School dairy is self sustained and self supporting activity. The tilling, manuring, seeding, watering, pest control, reaping activities go on uninterrupted round the year. There are many flower gardens and tree plantations spread all over the campus. These are nurtured and cared with the support of the School Dairy.
One of the many reasons, as why we are able to provide quality food in the mess at reasonable rates is that the milk supplied to the mess from the dairy is reasonably priced.
